Slothwerks recently revealed their upcoming card-based battler for iOS, and it's looking pretty darn good. Finally working on a new project! https://t.co/0PjgXhk7Ne pic.twitter.com/lk4LmhgehN— Slothwerks (@slothwerks) July 1, 2017 Meteorfall is Slothwerks' first project in three years, would you believe it? It's a desk-building roguelike inspired by Peter Whalen's Dream Quest, in which you'll collect cards and encounter various monsters, temples, shops, and more as you go on.After choosing a character (each of which has their own deck), you'll work your way through the game through different elements. Interestingly, the idea isn't to jam your deck full of ultra-powerful cards, but rather cards that mesh together well.In the developer's blog post, he describes how combat works in the game since that's a huge part of the overall experience."When you draw a card, you can either swipe it left or swipe it right. If you swipe it left, you ‘take a breather’ for that action and recover stamina. Otherwise, you pay the stamina cost for the card and resolve the effect. Slash is a really simple card, and Bruno’s basic deck is composed primarily of Slash cards. After you run out of actions, its’ your opponent’s turn. The battle continues to go back-and-forth until one character is victorious. If you run out of abilities in your deck, your discard pile if shuffled back in."Check out the full blog post here to read up on the combat (which I suggest you do), and join us in waiting for more news about this gorgeous looking card game. Slothwerks aims to get the game out by the end of the year, but a lot can happen.
Merchant Run – The Gold Rush is a new endless runner from three-man development team 22u. The game is available now for Android devices and will see players roaming across the land as a travelling merchant. That means you'll be hopping onto your horse-drawn cart and exploring the lands whilst picking up various riches along the way that you'll be able to sell. Being a travelling merchant isn't easy, however, as hauling around a cart filled with valuable goods is certain to attract thieves who will need to be avoided.Mangavania review - "Retro pixel art but not much else"In addition to opportunistic bandits, there will be obstacles to avoid hurtling into as well such as rocks, boxes and fallen tree branches. There will apparently be other hidden dangers lurking within each level too, so you'll need to keep your reflexes sharp. The gold earned from selling the items you find along the way can be spent to upgrade your cart, horse and equipped accessories. Each cart variant will have its own strengths and weaknesses to consider before embarking on another journey. There will also be a few abilities at your disposal to make the journey easier, some of which you can see in the embedded video below.

You might already be familiar with Clash of Kings, the real-time strategy game from Chinese company Elex Tech. It tasks you with building a city, creating an army, forging alliances and fighting for control of an empire – all that good stuff.Clash of Kings: The West is a tweaked version of the MMO designed to rebalance the gameplay to appeal to a Western audience. You’ll probably notice more players from Europe and the US, for a start. There are number of exclusive events including West Go, which gives you the chance to catch a dragon and send it out to defeat your enemies, and Viking Invasion, which (surprise, surprise) involves repelling a Viking invasion and winning yourself a chest full of gold in the process. There’s also an upcoming Explorer’s Guild feature, allowing you to venture through dungeons in pursuit of hidden treasure. This time round, there’s a focus on reducing the influence of in-game purchases over whether players win or lose in battle, so success is more about your strategic nous, and less about cold hard cash. There’s also a safety net to get you back up on your feet. If your castle is destroyed, the King – with all the royal humility he can muster – will help you out with re-enforcements. You’ll also get a boost of resources if your defense and power level really hit the rocks - so you won’t end up at rock bottom.Nobody likes a cheat – so in Clash of Kings: The West, Elex Tech has taken a stricter approach to preventing cheaters spoiling the fun for the rest of us. You can also help out by using the new in-game mailbox to report any hacking going on.

The Chinese Room's critically acclaimed narrative-driven game Dear Esther is now available for iOS devices.Despite being a critical darling when it was released back in 2012 Dear Esther is often the source of ridicule from folks who don't' feel that it's really a game. Whatever you may think of it, Dear Esther is certainly an important game. It paved the way for more games of its ilk such as the excellent What Remains of Edith Finch. So it's great to see it make its way over to Apple devices. If you've never had any dealings with Dear Esther it's a story-focused game where you explore the coastline of the mysterious Hebridean isle. Accompanying you on your journey is an unknown narrator who reads out parts of a letter that was written to the titular Esther. As you explore the isle you may see various scribblings on cave walls and different parts of some machine scattered throughout the environment. You might also spy a spectral being off in the distance on occasion as well as you're left to interpret the events of the story. It's also a visually spectacular looking game with incredible amounts of detail to be found in the environment. Given its age, it still holds up remarkably well and I'm intrigued to see how that translates to iPhones and iPads. If you're pressed for time but are interested in what Dear Esther has to offer, fear not. It's not a particularly long game, you'll be able to see everything it has to offer in around an hour though you can expect the game to stick with you a fair bit longer than that.Dear Esther is available now on the App Store. It's a premium game that costs $4.99/£4.99.Check out our news section to discover the latest, and greatest, games.
